Planning a safari in Botswana

For any adventurous traveler, going on a safari to Botswana is the best choice. The country is blessed with awesome waterways, luxury camping, and breathtaking landscapes teeming with wildlife. From the Chobe River’s teeming banks to the Okavango Delta’s tranquil beauty and Makgadikgadi’s shimmering salt pans, experience the ultimate African wildlife adventure.

The first destination to think about when planning a safari to Botswana is the Chobe National Park, which is famous for having the largest concentration of elephants in the whole world. In addition to elephants, the park is also blessed with many other animals like buffaloes, giraffes, and zebras, and also, it’s also where you can easily spot big cats. The best way to explore Chobe National Park and be able to spot a lot of elephants is by taking boat cruises to the shores of Chobe River, which is rich in wildlife. This makes it a perfect destination for any adventure lovers planning to visit Botswana.

To experience more of Botswana’s diverse landscapes: After Chobe National Park’s wildlife-rich savannas, continue to the serene Okavango Delta, where the dug canoe awaits, and later, to the surreal Makgadikgadi salt pans for a unique meerkat encounter.

From Makgadikgadi salt pans, you can also visit The Central Kalahari Game Reserve, which is located central part of the country and is one of the world’s largest protected areas, encompassing vast expanses of semi-arid desert. Its attractions include stunning desert landscapes, unique floras and faunas, and vibrant wildlife such as lionesses, cheetahs, giraffes, and springboks. You can also enjoy thrilling game drives and cultural experiences with San peoples, who share their traditional bits of knowledge of the land. It’s a must-see for adventurous travelers seeking serenity and raw beauty.

Lions Spotted on a Safari in Botswana

Botswana’s exclusivity comes at a price; its high-end lodges and camps, often accessed by bush plane, prioritize responsible, low-impact tourism. For a budget-friendly alternative, consider mobile safaris – group adventures offering camping experiences and exploring Moremi and Chobe, combining wildlife viewing with affordability.

Best time to visit for a safari in Botswana

The optimal time for a Botswana safari is during the high and dry seasons, from June to October. This period boasts the most favorable conditions for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around the remaining water sources, making animal siteing easier.

In these months of the year, the Okavango Delta is always at its peak when the level of water rises, allowing the amazing mokoro rides, gliding silently along the waterways, offering amazing opportunities for wildlife watching. Imagine yourself gently drifting, surrounded by the serene beauty of the delta, while elephants bathe nearby and hippos lazily submerge. The drier climate also ensures comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring the diverse landscapes and embarking on game drives in the national parks. While the dry season is the most popular time to visit the country, it’s also the busiest, so booking in advance is important to secure your preferred accommodations and activities.

Where to stay on safari in Botswana

The rapid development of the tourism industry in the country has led to the establishment of many accommodation facilities in the country and in the tourist attractions. For example, when you visit Chobe National Park, there are several lodging options, like the Chobe Game Lodge (the only lodge inside the park), Chobe Safari Lodge, and Chobe Bakwena Lodge. Photographers will appreciate Pangolin Chobe Hotels, which provide specialized boats featuring swivel seats and gimbal mounts for optimal wildlife photography on the Chobe River, allowing you to capture stunning images.

When planning a safari to Botswana, just be sure that you can get accommodation of your budget.

How to Travel around Botswana

4×4 Land Cruiser for Self-Drive Hire in Botswana

Traveling in Botswana is an adventure with several options to explore its breathtaking landscapes. For budget travelers, buses and shared minibusses (combis) are widely available for getting between towns, though schedules may not always be fixed. For more remote areas like the Okavango Delta or Chobe National Park, self-driving 4×4 vehicles are popular, but ensure you’re prepared for rough terrain. Domestic flights or chartered planes are another option, especially for reaching remote luxury lodges. Safari operators often offer guided tours, combining transport and activities. Hitching rides is also common among locals but should be done cautiously. Always prioritize safety and plan routes carefully!
The post Planning Your Botswana Safari: A Comprehensive Guide first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Going on a safari in Tanzania or Africa is one of the most amazing adventures you can experience. However, it demands thorough preparation, as it often involves some discomfort and long drives. The roads in Tanzania, particularly the unpaved ones, can be quite challenging, with potholes, and dust. Additionally, even though your drivers are highly experienced and knowledgeable, there’s no guarantee of spotting animals because they are in their natural habitat and move freely.

To make the most of your safari, approach it with a sense of humor, treat your driver well (as an unhappy driver can spoil your safari experience), and try to get along with your fellow travelers. Safaris to destinations such as Arusha National Park, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Tarangire National Park are the best start from Arusha City. For trips to Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi, and Ruaha National Parks, Dar es Salaam serves as the ideal starting point.

It’s essential to explore the different parks by vehicle, as walking is generally not permitted within most park areas. You can join an organized safari through a Travel Agent or choose to go self-drive by renting a safari vehicle or you can decide to take your car if you trust it. We recommend hiring a guide upon arrival at the park to ensure you don’t miss out on spotting the incredible wildlife.

This website lists numerous safari companies. You can book your safari in advance or upon arriving in Tanzania. While you might find discounts by booking locally, it’s important to ensure the safari company is properly licensed and a member of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO). TATO represents over 240 tour operators and is an excellent starting point for your search.

If you decide to book your safari upon arrival in Tanzania, be cautious of companies offering suspiciously cheap deals on the street. These often turn out to be unreliable and may seem inexpensive because they don’t include park entrance fees.

Game Drive

Safari prices and durations vary greatly, but generally, you get what you pay for. The cost can fluctuate significantly based on your accommodation and group size.

For an all-inclusive safari staying in large lodges with twice-daily game drives and buffet meals, expect to pay around $150 to $250 per person per day. This price can increase if you opt for air transfers.

On the top bar of the scale, staying in luxury tented camps and lodges, and flying between destinations, you can expect to pay over US$500 per person per day.

On the budget end, a camping safari using standard campsites in national parks costs approximately US140 to US180 per person per day. This is reasonable considering that park entrance fees alone can be US$50 per day in some parks.

The rates usually include park fees, vehicle and driver costs, and food. You’ll need to bring your own sleeping bag and possibly a roll mat. Some companies provide drinking water, but you should purchase enough bottles to last you the entire trip before you depart.
The post Tanzania Safari: What to Expect, How to Prepare, and How Much It Costs first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Known as the ‘Spice Island,’ Zanzibar is a tropical paradise with palm-dotted beaches, clear blue waters, and an amazing blue sky. The island is found 25 miles off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

Organizing a safari or holiday to Zanzibar needs a lot of preparation, although some parts of Zanzibar have become commercialized and lost some of their original charm, you can still find tranquil beaches if you take the time to plan your visit to this enchanting archipelago.

The main island, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, is an amazing destination to visit located east of mainland Tanzania, stretching approximately 96km in length and 38km in width. The island is popular for its beautiful beaches, swaying palm trees, delectable seafood, vibrant coral reefs, and the Stone Town, which UNESCO has recently acknowledged as a World Heritage Site.

The island’s northeast part, known as Matemwe, is famous for its amazing natural beauty and being near to the famous diving spots. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of the vast Indian Ocean, stroll along pristine white-sand beaches, and admire the breathtaking coral reef at Mnemba Atoll. The area is also home to lush, wild vegetation and a small fishing village, where fishermen set out each morning in their traditional dhows to sail the expansive ocean.

Zanzibar Island also has an international airport (Abeid Amani Karume International Airport) with direct flights to Europe and regional destinations such as Dar es Salaam, and Arusha and other destinations in east Africa like Nairobi Kenya, Entebbe Uganda, and others. Additionally, you can travel by water using the daily ferry services that operate between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. Transfers to or from the seaport, Stone Town, or the airport can also be organized for your convenience.

Stone Town – Zanzibar

The island’s specialty is fresh seafood, which is obtained from the local market daily. The dishes offer a delightful blend of African and European flavors. Don’t miss the beautiful sunrise views as you enjoy your tea or coffee on your veranda. In the evening, witness the moonrise over the sea—a breathtakingly romantic sight that is memorable. On moonless nights, gaze up at the brilliantly star-lit sky.

The local snorkeling and diving sites cater to all experience levels, from beginners to experienced divers. The reefs, especially around Matemwe, are rich in variety. You’ll find an abundance of hard and soft corals, sponges, and anemones. The diverse species of fish will surely amaze you. If you are a lucky traveler, there is a chance of spotting dolphins or even a whale passing by the reef. The chances of seeing whales are higher from August to October.

Enjoy the amazing local culture and the vibrant village life in Zanzibar from the neighboring village.

Zanzibar’s history dates back to the eras of the earliest dhows from India and Arabia, which found this African natural harbor. The island served as a stopover for caravans traveling deeper into Africa. Over time, permanent settlements emerged, leading to the establishment of Stone Town.

Upon arriving in Stone Town by sea, visitors are welcomed by the House of Wonders, a stunning building that once served as the administrative center for the sultan. Adjacent to it is the sultan’s town palace, with the now decrepit walkways that once connected the two structures. Nearby, the Portuguese Fort stands as a reminder of their short occupation of the people on the island. Not far from here is the Anglican Cathedral, built over the site of the ancient slave market to help heal the wounds of a painful past. The major historic tourist site on the island is the Stone Town much like beaches, famous for its serene seascapes and island charm. Visitors can choose from several beaches, each offering tranquil, crystal-clear waters and a tropical climate.
The post Things to do and see on Zanzibar Holiday first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Other than passports, other essential documents worth obtaining or carrying for your African safari include a yellow fever certificate, COVID-19 vaccination certificates, e-tickets, travel insurance, and travel plan. Visas are among other essential documents visitors on an African safari should pay close attention to. Visas are needed because they are required if you are to have entry to most of the countries in Africa.

Cash

Most of the African countries have not transitioned from cash to modern technologies and most of the transactions are carried out using cash. While in the bush enjoying a wildlife safari in Africa, credit card machines are nowhere to be seen. ATMs are available in urban centers and to ease your transaction while in the destination you must exchange your dollars, pounds, and sterling for local currency. This can help you in case you want to purchase some small items such as drinks, toiletries, and others.

What to carry for 2 weeks African safari?

The main reason why most visitors travel to Africa is to enjoy game viewing or game drive/wildlife viewing and the popular destinations for game safaris include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and South Sudan among others. You immerse yourself into the wild to see a diversity of wildlife and this is what differentiates a typical African safari from the normal tours in other destinations. If you plan to undertake a 2-week wildlife or gorilla safari holiday in Africa, then the following items must be carried; insect repellent preferably DEET, 3 layering tanks/t-shirt, a duffel/soft-sided bag, a light scarf, a utility jacket, 1 to 2 long-sleeved shirts, 2 pairs of pants, toiletries, sunscreen, moisturizer, wide brim hat, first aid kit, USB flash drive, waterproof dry bag, good hiking shoes, and others.

Luggage & other essentials

When packing, be mindful of the weight as some destinations are strict on it especially if you plan to undertake bush flight safaris in places such as Masai Mara National Reserve or Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Most small planes require a specific weight size for example SafariLink or AirKenya are strict on weight to carry but they charge a small fee. We advise our clients to carry soft-sided luggage which makes it easier to be put in compartments.

Bric’s X-bag 22 folding duffel

This is essential for tourists who plan to embark on an African safari in the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is waterproof, sturdy, and classy. You can easily fold it down into a small zippered pouch making it easier to pack. If you heading to Tanzania or Kenya for an African safari holiday, try as much as you can to avoid plastic bags.

African safari clothing

Clothes should be left out on your packing list for an African safari. When choosing the attire to put on an African safari, you must be mindful of African culture- dress decently in a manner that doesn’t affect people’s culture. Respect for African culture is key. When packing be mindful of the weight airlines require and often, luggage of 15-30kgs is allowed while some aircraft only accept luggage of 12-15kgs. There are also laundry services offered at most lodges or hotels in most of the African safari destinations but at visitors’ cost. This means you don’t need to worry in case you want to change clothes any day. The preferred clothing for an African safari holiday includes long pants and long-sleeved shirts- these are essential in protecting you from insect bites or scratches while on walking safaris. Avoid shorts or skirts if you are heading for an African holiday- they are only good for game drives. When choosing clothes, avoid bright colors and find those that blend with the environment.

Safari footwear

There are many ways of exploring Africa- tourists can engage in walking safari or guided game viewing. If you are heading for walking, hiking, gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking, then we recommend sturdy hiking boots that should be waterproof.

Safari hat

Find a good safari hat that is wide enough to protect you from scorching sunshine while you enjoy your African safari. It should be covering your face and neck. You may also need swimsuits, and casual clothes, especially for tourists who plan to spend a night in luxury accommodation facilities with swimming pools.

Prescribed medicines/medical kit

Carry prescribed medication on your African safari just in case of any emergency. You need anti-malaria medicine, anti-diarrhea, and others. The medical kit or first aid kit always contains a variety of these plus bandages, plasters, and others.

Camera and other gadgets

A complete African safari is one that you return home when you have taken pictures. The pictures shall always keep reminding you of that incredible safari holiday you had in Africa and you can achieve this when you have the best camera. If you are heading for extraordinary primate adventures such as gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo or chimpanzee tracking, we recommend good cameras with no flashlight. You may also have a pair of binoculars- Africa is one of the world’s leading birding destinations and expects to see a diversity of bird species.

Waterproof bag

A waterproof bag large enough is essential to help you pack and protect your gadgets such as cameras. This is because rains in most of the African safari destinations are unpredictable and early preparation is essential.

Plug converters

Most safari lodges and hotels in Africa offer many universal plug adaptors for tourists to use while in their rooms or tents though you can also carry your own. The electric voltage in Africa is usually 220-240volt though this may differ from country to country with the plug type.
The post Packing For An African Safari first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Gorilla trekking safari means a special kind of nature expedition where tourists will walk in the thick jungle for over 2hours in search of these rare and endangered mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas in the whole world can be found in 3 African countries of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Rwanda in the Virunga Mountains which is a chain of Volcanoes covering the park of East Africa.

Mountain gorillas do not exist anywhere else in the wild and they are not found in captivity. Tourists all over the world every year travel to this side of the African continent to visit these rare primates species, for anyone to visit mountain gorillas in any of these three countries, needs to acquire gorilla permits.

Depending on your budget and interest, you can visit mountain gorillas in any of these 3 countries and the price for a gorilla permit in the three countries differ for example, in Uganda gorilla permit is sold at 650$ per permit, in DRC gorilla permits are sold at 450$ per permit and in Rwanda, they are for 1500$ per permit.

After getting the gorilla permit, the next step is traveling to the national park headquarter depending on which park you want to visit and once you at the park always in the morning, you will be briefed about gorilla trekking rules, a ranger guide will lead a small group of eight or less into the misty jungles in the search for these animals. Once the gorillas are tracked down, the tourists will be allowed a maximum of an hour to stay with the mountain gorillas, take photos, record videos and observe them as the mum is caring for the young and the youth play from one branch of trees to another.

This makes the country the best destination for any tourist interested in going gorilla trekking in Africa.

Rwanda gorilla trekking is done in Volcanoes National park which is found in the northwestern part of the country. The park is part of the Virunga Mountains and features 5 volcanoes namely Karisimbi, Muhabura, Bisoke, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. The park is not only home to Mountain gorillas, but still, Volcanoes National Park is home to a variety of wildlife like golden monkeys, over 178 different species of birds the thing which makes the park also a perfect birding destination.

Going gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, every tourist will need to acquire a gorilla permit that can be purchased from the Rwanda development board (RDB) at 1500$ per day. There are several reasons which make Rwanda the favorable gorilla trekking destination and the main one is being the distance whereby traveling from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park can only take a 2-hour drive not like in Uganda where a tourist will need to travel an 8-hour drive from Kampala to Bwindi Forest or Mgahinga National Park.

Alongside gorilla trekking in Rwanda, the country is also blessed with other interesting and historical attractions for example the genocide memorial sites plus the wildlife in Akagera National Park where you can enjoy watching different animals and Nyungwe Forest National Park where you can spot Chimpanzees and also enjoy canopy walk.

Gorilla Trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Mountain Gorilla trekking in DRC is done in Virunga National Park which is found in the eastern part of the country. Gorilla trekking safaris in DRC are not yet popular because of the political unrest in the country per now. This made Uganda and Rwanda who are politically safe to be the best choice for any tourist who would love to visit mountain gorillas in their natural environment.
The post See the Mountain Gorilla Close Up in African Jungles first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Waterfalls are one of the treasures Uganda holds and offers to thousands of tourists on guided and self drive Uganda safari. One of such magnificent places you should never miss to explore within this beautiful country is the Sisiyi waterfalls, found in Eastern Uganda. It is found at the edge of Mount Elgon National Park within Buyaga sub-county in Bulambuli district, north-east of Mbale and Sironko and described in Bagishu dialect as “Mezi ge Lisus” meaning the smoky waters.

This waterfalls is an outstanding site nestled from a distance as you proceed through the highway from Mbale to the other eastern Uganda districts such as Bulambuli, Moroto, Sironko and Kapchorwa and the has a white patch flowing down the side of the rugged rock outshining a verdant green backdrop covering this side of the Elgon Mountains.

However even with its beauty, Sisiyi waters still remains one of the less explored and least documented attractions in the country yet it never dries or falls short of its beauty whether it’s a rainy or dry season. It is however said that the waterfalls were as huge and powerful as the Bujagali waterfalls in Jinja and even the surrounding areas were once part of the falls. The area is covered by the lush vegetation that also protects the spot from the strong rays of the sun.

Surrounding the waterfalls are the Bamasaba (Bagishu) who are primarily farming communities with their land blessed with rich volcanic soils and have for years earned a living from farming. They also use the waters from the waterfalls and nearby river to irrigate crops during the dry season.

The waterfalls sit on a ten acre private piece of land and anyone who has seen or visited the Sisiyi waterfalls (especially while traveling through the highway) before will agree that it looks like a white sheet dropped over the summit of the mountain. Even after having a glance of it from a distance, you will feel indebted to organizing a trip to the area to enjoy it more. The fresh freezing breeze here is unsurpassed and refreshing but most interestingly, you will be lost in admiration for the rich and beautiful Mother Nature.

There is also a planted Eucalyptus forest that offers a cooling canopy above and extensive trimmed lawns that are perfect for camping and picnics for up to 200 tourists. The site where the waterfalls are found also features the Sisiyi Falls Resort for tourists to spend overnights and accommodation goes for Shs 40,000 per night. Activities to enjoy within this site include bird watching, rock climbing and village walks.

How to Get to Sisiyi waterfalls

Sisiyi waterfalls are found at about 38 kilometers East of Mbale Town (three hours drive from Kampala and can be reached by public or private transport means to the Town of Mbale where you will then proceed to Buyaga Trading Center by a Boda-boda or special hire vehicle. The falls can be accessed through three big stones and trees along the way and are believed to date back to 500 years ago.

You will see several homesteads dotted along the route that comprised of mainly semi-permanent houses built from mud and wattle. When you reach towards the site, you will be welcomed by the vibrations of the roaring waterfall which becomes louder as you get closer to the point that you will have to shout when speaking to the person next to you.
The post The Breathtaking Sisiyi Waterfalls first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.

Kampala is the capital and commercial city of Uganda, it’s estimated to have a population of 1,650,800 people by 2019. The city was divided into 5 divisions, for example, Kampala central division, Makidye Division, Rubaga Division, Nakawa Division, and Kawempe Division. Visiting Kampala will never be boring if you put some points in mind and below are some of the things you have to know before traveling to Kampala.

1. Feel Free and comfortable

Ugandans are really proud of their city and it’s believed that Ugandans are the friendliest people in Africa. Some tourists have the belief that most of the African countries are not safe the thing which put pressure on them to the extent of feeling unsafe and uncomfortable when on a safari in Africa. But when it comes to traveling to Kampala – Uganda it’s really a different case because Ugandans are such welcoming people who will make u feel comfortable when traveling in their country.

2. Acquiring Uganda Visa

E-visa
Citizens of some countries will not need a visa to enter Uganda, but in case you need a visa to enter Uganda, the Visa can be purchased online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration website (www.visas.immigration.go.ug) which is the only genuine visa application portal and as per now, the Uganda visa is at 50$.

Visa on Arrival
Still, there may be a situation when you didn’t get time to apply for a visa online, in Uganda, there is an opportunity of getting the visa on arrival at all entry points. But in case you have planned your trip to Uganda well it’s advisable at least to apply it online so that you don’t waste much time at the airport or border when they are processing the visa, another thing the e-visas are expected to replace the visa on arrival. So we would recommend at least using an online visa application. You will need just to attach your passport copy, a clear passport photo size, and your yellow fever vaccination certificate.

East Africa tourist visa
In case you’re planning to visit Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, the cheapest way is to get a single East African tourist visa which is a single entry visa for foreigners visiting these 3 east African countries, and the tourists who get the East Africa Tourist Visa must start travel from the country that has issued the Visa. The visa is purchased at 100$.

3. Vaccinations

Above all else yes you do need to get vaccinated for some diseases before you travel to Uganda for example, without a Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate you cannot get a visa. On top of that, it is additionally advisable that you get immunizations for other diseases like Hepatitis, Typhoid, and Rabies although it’s not compulsory.

4. Malaria

Among the risks you will have to face when you planning a Uganda safari is malaria because malaria is common throughout the country due to the warm tropical climate of the country which harbor mosquitoes and in an addition to the several swamp areas, trees, and water ponds which acts as the breeding ground for the mosquitoes which cause malaria. So when planning to visit Uganda be away from mosquitoes and it’s highly recommended that you take malaria medications, and also take proper avoidance measures like carrying insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants in the evening hours when mosquitoes are most active.

5. Safety of the country

When it comes to safety, Uganda is among the safest countries in Africa with very few crime rates. So you will feel safe while exploring this amazing destination. Although the country is very safe, it’s not recommended walking in the downtown areas alone at night but generally enjoying Kampala nightlife is safe just you have to avoid few places. When you planning to explore the up-country side of the country, it’s recommended to avoid the areas near the border of South Sudan in the very far north of the country, yet it’s very safe to visit Kidepo Valley National park and other national parks in the country are very safe to visit but still, it’s advisable to go with 4×4 strong safari vehicle.

6. Best time to visit Uganda

Uganda can be visited throughout the year but the best and most convenient time to visit the country is during the dry season in the months from June to August and from December to February. During these months wild animals in national parks are easy to spot during the dry season because the grass will be low and spending some time waiting at the water concentration area in the park, gives you a chance to spot most of the animals in the park because they come to drink water. The high season months in Uganda are from June to September. The most challenging months to go on a safari to Uganda are March, April, and May because in these months its rains almost every day traveling to national parks become different because of the bad roads in all national parks. But the main advantage of traveling during these wet months it’s that the Uganda safari becomes cheap whereby even all lodges in the national parks reduce their prices due to few guests, safari companies also reduce the prices of their packages, and even the safari car rental companies reduce their price so if you don’t mind driving in the muddy road, and when you want to save more on your safari, the wet season is the best time for you to travel to Uganda.

7. Uganda Currency

The Ugandan currency is called Uganda Shillings which is abbreviated as UGX although Ush is mostly used by locals to abbreviate Uganda shillings. The first thing you have to put in mind when planning a safari to Uganda is that you’re going to a cash economy country meaning your credit card and Visa card will not be of help all the time meaning you will have to carry cash with you to purchase things. Some big supermarkets in big town centers can accept credit cards but since you going on a safari to up-country in national parks there you will not find any place where you will use your visa card and even your dollar money. So when leaving a big town center exchange your dollar money to UGX and have enough money to use up-country.

8. Exchange Money

When it comes to exchanging money, for example, changing your dollar money to Uganda shillings, you will get the best rates when you go to Forex offices in towns and even at the airport you can exchange from there but the rates there are a bit low. It’s the same thing when you go to the banks to exchange money the rates are significantly low.

You should also be aware that, dollar notes which are dirty, with simple writings, and those which were printed in past 2003 will not be allowed in most Forex offices and banks.

9. Tipping in Uganda

In Uganda tipping someone is normal although it’s not compulsory. Most tour guides expect some times like after the tour, a game drive or a nature walk. Since most locals have limited access to forex offices, it’s better than at least if you tip them to do it in Uganda shillings.

10. Electricity when traveling in Uganda

Some places outside cities in Uganda don’t have electricity and most of the lodges in National park and other safari destinations use solar energy and generators which means you will have electricity at the lodge at a specific time and there will be limited electricity plugs. So you will be using that time when there is the power to charge your electrical devices like; camera, smartphone, laptop, and others.
Still, most safari vehicles come with an electricity inverter and there is also a provision of an electricity plug where you can charge your devices. So in case you going for a self-drive safari in Uganda make sure you request a vehicle with an electrical plug from where you will charge your devices from.

11. WiFi and internet Connections in Uganda

WiFi readily available in most places of the country and most safari lodges in national parks offer free WiFi but sometimes it’s always free. The best advice is to buy a prepaid sim card and they can be acquired from any telecom shop and data can start from 15$ and get something like 5gd. There is a 4G network all over the country and in the different national parks.

12. Road Conditions in the country

Although most of the roads outside town centers have been improved and they are in good conditions, there are many roads most especially in remote areas of the country are in bad conditions and sometimes the condition of the road will depend on the season of the year for example during the wet season most roads become impassable and some seasonal rivers floods. So in case you planning to visit the country any time of the year, it’s recommended that at least you go with a 4×4 safari vehicle.

13. Gas Stations

Gas stations are everywhere in the country yet once in a while you need to ensure you have enough fuel for a long journey. Plan your safari carefully for instance in case you have Kidepo Valley National Park on your safari itinerary, It’s advisable that you fill the tank before you enter the park because there will be no fuel stations in the park and the nearest fuel station from Kidepo is in Kaabong and Kitgum. So for that reason if possible you can also ask for a jelly cane to carry any extra fuel if you spend some days in Kidepo Valley National Park.
The post 13 Tips to put in mind before Traveling to Kampala – Uganda first appeared on 4x4 Self Drive Africa.
